During our most recent trip to Nicaragua, we were able to meet a few of the artists. Alfredo Espinosa runs his own pottery shop with the help of his brother, Angel, and few other talented friends.
We asked him what the name of his shop was and he told us it didn't have a name. No name! "What do you call it then?", we asked. His friends answered for him, "La Tienda de Alfredo Espinosa" all laughing and Alfredo blushing. So I jointed the name down La Tienda de Alfredo Espinosa which translates into "The Store of Alfredo Espinosa".
It has proven quite catchy. Alfredo and his friends are quite the jokesters, but Alfredo is very camera shy...it took a lot of cohorsting to get him to pose for this photo. Here he is posed with his custom piece in his right hand, which you can find out more information on, here.
Their shop is located on the road to Masaya. The Salazor family is an excellent example of a local family that works together and utilizes each others skills to be successful. They run a small shop which also doubles as their home.
Using your home for business is a common way to work in Nicaragua. Many people own small shack-like homes on the side of the road which have great access to travelers. As you drive on the road from Masaya to Jinotepe, you will see many of these home run pottery shops.
