Masaya, the heart of Nicaraguan folklore and crafts, is located just 17 miles
south of Managua. These handicrafts are one of the important industries of the country and variety of products is extensive. From the famous hammocks, woodcarvings, and leather goods, to the primitivism painting and the handmade cigars, this region hosts the largest markets in Nicaragua.
Walking through these markets any day of the week, will take you back in time as you are mesmerized by the intricate details in all of the custom made items. You will be pleasantly surprised to find a group of people that have such a sense of pride and ownership in their work, and still have not lost that connection with their ancestors who passed down the
knowledge and tradition of these crafts.
While at the market you will quickly and easily make friends with the young local children who will then become your guide, confidant, carrier of your newly acquired purchases, and many-times, your translator and bargainer. Pictured to the left, is our little helper, Jose Gladimir.
As with the pottery, by purchasing these authentic pieces, you have the ability to help the artisans of this region continue to create high quality pieces while also assisting us with our program that will give back to this community to help assure the increase of educational opportunities for the children and families in general.
Jimmy Suazo pictured on the right works at one of the hammock shops we visited, Oscar's Hammock Shop. In this photo he was showing us how the hand make each individual hammock, selecting colors and patterns. I was amazed on how quickly they work, must take a lot of practice. Click on Jimmy's photo for more pictures of Oscar's Hammock Shop.
