During our most recent trip to Nicaragua, we were able to meet a few of the artists. Federico, Marisol and Lorena Salazar Bracamonte are siblings who run The Salaraz Family Pottery Shop. Their shop is located on the road to Masaya. The Salazar family is an excellent example of a local family that works together and utilizes each others skills to be successful.
The Salazar family runs a small shop which also doubles as their home. Using your home for business is a common way to work in Nicaragua. Many people own small shack-like homes on the side of the road which have great access to travelers. As you drive on the road from Masaya to Jinotepe, you will see many of these home run pottery shops. Pictured to the right is the
The Salaraz Family Pottery Shop, the Salazar's house is adjoined and to the back of the shop. Also the nieghboring door opens to their home. About a quarter of their living area is sectioned off for the pottery shop area.
Federico is in the photo to the left holding a piece he designed and made. You can find more information about this piece, which we call Two Lip Dragon Vase here. To the right is Marisol who is posing in her home with a latern piece that isn't quite finished yet.
Also included in our photo moments is a picture of Federico's daughter with her friend. The younger girl on the left is his daughter and she happily gave us a tour of her home.
Bouncing around and pointing out her play area, netivity set (as our visit was during the holidays), bedrooms, etc. She is a cute one.
By purchasing these authentic pieces, you have the ability to help the artisans of this region continue to create high quality pieces while also assisting us with our program that will give back to this community to help assure the increase of educational opportunities for the children and families in general.
The Salaraz Family Pottery Shop is located in San Juan de Oriente, a town in Masaya populated by direct descendents of Chorotega Indians. Masaya is the Province and also its capital.
